The Louvre museum is the biggest museum in Paris by size (2 million sqft with 663,000 sqft reserved for special exhibitions). It is also one of the biggest in the world. Being situated in the heart of Paris between the right banks of the river Seine and the Rivoli street in the 1st district, the building is a former royal palace, the Louvre Palace. The equestrian statue of Louis XIV is the starting point of the historical axe but the building of not aligned to that. It is one of the oldest museums and the third biggest by surface in the world. The Louvre has a long history of art conservation and keeps history works of France ever since the Capetian kings until now.

As a universal museum, the Louvre covers a chronology and a geographical width since the antique times until 1848, from western Europe till Iran, passing Greece, Egypt and the Near East. In Paris the arts from the time after 1848 are covered by the Mus茅e d'Orsay and the Centre Pompidou and the Asian arts are shown in Guimet. African Arts and from America and the Pacific take their room in the Musee du quai Branly but a hundredweight of masterpieces are shown in the Pavillion des Sessions.
