I'm doing a French to English translation of a text and I can't seem to see clear in one of the questions.

Could anyone who has done translation as a subject help me out with this and give some exemples:

The question asks you to explain how you would go about translating the text you have been given, and your reasons for this e.g. would you just translate it literally, word for word? No, of course you wouldn't, because this would produce the sort of nonsensical result that you get when you try to translate something with Google! You would instead first read the text, and once you have thoroughly understood its meaning, you would rewrite the text in English. If the original text has been written in a particular style of language, then you might aim to convey this in your translation e.g. you might decide to translate "nous allons a Mc Do" as "we are going to Micky D's" rather than "we are going to McDonalds", as this will better convey the informal tone of the original. You will be making these sort of decisions when you transalate your text, and the question just asks you to outline them. Hope this helps get you started!French-English Translation question?

What type of schooling do you need to be a translator for the Canadian government?

I am fluent in four languages: Spanish, French, English and Hungarian. I could use some brushing up in grammar, since I don't use French or Spanish as often as I used to. No one taught me how to write in Hungarian, but I can read it. It just takes me a while to write it, and I have to use a dictionary to make sure I'm not spelling it wrong. I'm working full time in a hotel and I have a lot of free time to go back to school if I want to. I want a job where I can get Christamas or other holidays off and get a weekend off in the summer if I ask a month and a half in advance. Even when my hotel is full it's quiet because it is a suites hotel, so we get a lot of long term guests(not as many coming and going). I love talking to guests from different countries and practicing my languages, however I'm bored and not challenged enough. It's neat because I can watch TV and surf the net, but I can only do so much of that.What type of schooling do you need to be a translator for the Canadian government?
In the USA the first step is to take a standard civil-service exam. They probably have an equivalent testing process in Canada.



I think that it is probably a matter of CERTIFICATION rather than a specific degree program. You would probably need a B.A.



Go to the nearest Federal Government Office building and look for a personnel office (or whatever they might call it.)



If the Canadian government is anything like the US government, they will probably give you a test to see if you are proficient enough. Which test you take may depend on the "Job Title" you want to be considered for.



After taking the exam, if you pass, your degree of proficiency, education and work experience will probably qualify you for a specific salary bracket.



Depending on where you work in the government, you might also need (or be able to get) a security clearance.

How can I become a translator?

My goal is to become an interpreter. I speak English, Spanish, Creole and French is my mother tongue. I am planning on doing my B.A in Translation in French, English and Spanish and afterwords I would like to complete a Masters in Conference Interpretation. In order to get in, I need to write an admission exams. How can I improve my grammar, written and speaking skills in French, English and Creole so that I can achieve my goal? And what should one do if he or she wants to prepare themselves before getting into this field professionally?How can I become a translator?

There are hundreds of sites in English to improve grammar skills aimed at pupils within the UK. The BBC has a section of it's site aimed at school pupils for example and these are free. I can't see why these shouldn't work for you and I wouldn't be surprised if the same existed for the other languages you speak.

All big cities of the world have branches of the "Alliance francaise" They can give you translation jobs. The Alliance frabcaise in Paris should be able to help you get in touch with the appropriate branch of their organisation.
